I've heard that MH ballast "hummm". Does this seem to be the case with the smaller wattage units we use? Is the noise level noticeable? I haven't heard anyone complain about this so Im guess no, but i just wanted a direct answer. Imput appreciated!

I have a 150W metal halide ballast and it does humm, but it is hardly noticeable (when functioning properly). The noise from any fans that you have will drown it out completely. So, unless you don't have any fans and are watching silent films, then it really isn't anything to worry about.

I recently changed a faulty electronic ballast for a 400W magnetic one, expecting to have to do something about noise and heat.
In the event, it's virtually silent (as Zephyrus says, inaudible above the fairly quiet fans) and runs almost stone cold. In fact, the lamp makes MUCH more noise when starting than the ballast does running. I suspect that it all depends on the individual model - after all, noise isn't the first thing most lighting designers would worry about.
