Default OK to use smaller ballast?

I have a 575W MH lamp, but the ballast has failed. I also have a 250W ballast. Would this ballast work with the lamp (producing a lower output?). I'm happy to try it, providing there's no safety issue!
Cheers,
Dave.

No it wouldn't work. The lamps need a certain amount of power to light up and stay lit.

The light probably wouldn't even light up.
