Question Un-bodging a bodged OHP!

Having recently bought (eBay) a Portascribe OHP for use in a simple home cinema setup, I was disappointed when the bulb blew, though not entirely surprised. It's got a label on it, saying it takes 240v, 650w DYR lamps, so I bought one - & spare for next time it blew! I got the lamps this morning, & they didn't look the same as the original. I managed to fit one, as they were similar enough, and it lit up very dimly! Out with the multimeter, & it seems there's only 24v across the lamp... interesting.

On (very!) close inspection of the old lamp, it's a 250w, 24v item. I can see some non-standard looking soldering in there, & the second stage of the power switch does nothing, so someone obviously knows about the change in type!

My questions;

Dya reckon I can just find a 240v feed in there somewhere & bodge the bigger bulb in, or am I going to strugge with the reflector etc?

Why would someone have changed it??

How much better is it going to look when I get a decent sized lamp in there?! I'd never have bought a 250w projector intentionally

Thanks guys; I've been looking round here for ages & you've been loads of help already - this is just the first time I've had to post!
