Just trying to get out of moderation so thought Id introduce myself. I'm not yet truly a hobbyist, but have been playing around with the solder iron making my own cables and interconnects of late, and now looking to fix some malfunctioning amps, cassette players and speakers as a way into building my own kit. Why? Like many I suppose I feel a that there's much good sound and fun to be had for relatively low cost, and no longer being married, the cosmetics are no longer a priority.
I'm in the UK, my first 'proper' hi-fi was an early '70's SP25, an Amstrad (!!) amp and Linton II speakers.
I've now kind got a high-ish budget-end system with an LP12, Musical Fidelity NuVista and Electra 200 pre-amps, Electra 300 powewr amps, Electra 600 CDP or TEAC T1 CDT/MF X-DAC, depending on mood, Electra 500 tuner, and in a second system Linn Basic, and various British mid-budget amps and my old speakers and a few other 'projects'.
I'm hoping to bulid some better + cheaper kit based on other people's designs, before moving on to more ambitious stuff. A diy dac and a valve amp for instance.

Relatively inexpensive amps, kits, amp upgrades & repairs , etc. can be easily done with modular amp boards and module kits ... one good example is aussieamplifiers.com = I use 'em all and like 'em a lot. ( http://3dotaudio.com/ampics.html )
There are dozens of other module makers including the Pass Labs which sponsors a very extensive forum right here at DIYAudio.com ( http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?forumid=8 ) ... = quite good amps, modukles and kits that won't break the bank.
There is also a plathora of catagories that allow you to dig deeply into specialized technologies ... Ex: Class-D = http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?forumid=49 ... The UcD stuff has a good reputation as does the extensive list of TriPath / T-Amp kit makers ...

Cheers, I shall take a meander through the links. First off is finding a way to refoam a pair of Allison AL105 speakers I just picked up in a bargain-price system I bought on ebay.
