Default Hello all!

New to the forum, just chiming in for the first time. Great forum btw! Amazed to see all the great projects ppl have been building.

I'm a graphic designer living just outside of Toronto with an avid interest in woodworking. I dable a little with electronics and home automation and am looking to set up a HT in my basement. Although I'm a total noob when it comes to the technical side of audio, I have toyed with the idea of building my own speakers. I know what looks good (I really like the Divas by Swan Speakers) and would welcome the challenge of building curved cabinets. It seems that everything I attemp to do is never simple (even my back deck is a two tiered round deck with a bent-wood curved bench ).

Don't know where to begin.

Thanks for now,

Loris.

They are much like Bowers and Wilkins (B&W), I built a small version of the top model (Natilus). Only I made it a two-way transmissionline (open end...)

They are really amazingly good acoustic (or should I say non acoustic) shapes I've ever used as an enclosure.. They sounded really pure..
I do intend to build them up again and do some nice finishing on them...
Here's a picture of what's left of it:

Indeed welcome Loris,

You can start by having a listen at a speakerbuilding store nearby, most of them have the designs built up and ready in a room to listen to.

You can adapt many designs into a cabinet that suits the looks you like....I've tempered with the idea of curved wooden panels myself, I guess it omes down to bending thin sheets and glue them on top of eachother layer after layer....very not simple, but ultra cool to achieve!

Regards,
Vincent.

I have also seen it done as layered "slices" of MDF.

A pattern template would be a must in this kind of construction. Then again you could always build your own CNC machine!

If you are thinking of laminating, you can do it with plywood as well. Here's how I did it.

And this is what happened to the leftover cut outs.

Very nice links fellas,

and nice artistic work Cal!

I designed the 'Nautilus' kind of design in 3d studio max and sliced the shape into several slices, printed the shapes on A4 papers that I taped to the wood (12mm MDF). The rest was some 150 meters on the electric saw...(sweat dripping business)...

A DIY CNC-machine would make a lot of dreams come true...

Sorry I don't know any of these shops near Toronto, here I can choose between about 10 shops within a 200 kilometer range....
