Hello,

I've just joined Diyaudio and I'm located in Hong Kong. My main interests are listening to music and making my own DIY audio equipment such as DAC's, Tube line and power amplifiers, RIAA stages, headphone amps. etc. My present project is a MPX decoder for use with some of my older tube FM tuners employing a TDA1578 TDM PLL Chip, it will incorporate a seperate low noise power supply. I am looking for also a discrete buffer stage to be used between the TDA1578 audio output and the linestage input and would love to hear from anyone who has a circuit/pcb layout that could be used for such application.

Hi John,

Nice of you to drop me the note. I'm also part of a group who are intersted with all things to do with FM tuners which can be found at FMtuners under the Yahoo Groups, we have about 3192 members all interested in the preserving, restoration of vintage FM tuners as well ad DIY, modification and upgrade of tuners.

There is a very established FM Tuner webpage at http://www.fmtunerinfo.com/ which is attached with the Yahoo Tuner Group and would suggest DiyAudio members who are interested in FM Tuners to take a look at the webpage which is extremely informative with reviews from A to Z of many of the top of the range (both tube and transistor) tuners and allot of information on performance upgrades and modifications available to existing tuners to obtain optimum and audiophile grade performance. Best thing to do is to take a look, there is so much stuff there.

Tuner performance is a less well undertood area in diy. My FM tuner uses a proper tuning gang - no varicaps here...

Unfortunately in my location (UK) there is only one station (classical) which is not compressed to hell. This, despite there being a station on every channel, is a sad situation. Nevertheless, they still sound better than the DAB alternatives

Over compression always seems to be a problem with FM Stations, they seem to love compressors and we simply do not know why?

On my side of the pond we have yet to explore DAB, RDS or other nasties that the FM channels can live without and we are still simply the old analogue style FM. So we have something to be thankful about. On the other hand, I am in the same situation as you with only one channel that has decent classical and jazz music. The rest is all local Canto-pop or Chinese music. I don't have any grudge againt Chinese music as I can understand and speak their language like second nature.

I just wished the DJ's and the stations would be a little bit more creative and resourceful about their programming.

If you do take the plung to join us on the FM Tuners Yahoo Group, you will find quite a few members located in UK and Europe who have modified their tuners to become long distance reception performers (DX machines). You could possibly do the same for your tuner and with the installation of a better antenna and rotor could enjoy many more progarmmes then you presently have.

I have modified my machines and frequently receive long distance FM signals from way across the border here. The guys are also very helpful with providing useful advice on how to go about it and what can be done or what can't be done. Hope to see your there also.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm trying to search through previous threads for circuits for anything close to a +24V dc regulated power supply which I could put together for my little Creek OBH-8 phono amplifier.

Several clones of the Jung regulator are interesting
