hello all new diyer with a few questions

Hello all I'm Zac. I'm interested in building my own audio equipment. I'm wondering if anyone here can point me to the right area to learn more about portable battery powered systems? I want to build a good full sounding portable speaker system using 3inch or smaller speakers and a budget of less than $50. I have a few ideas but could use any input offered by those more experienced than I. Thanks everyone

Hi,

Can't be done for $50, and at the budget end of the market you
simply can't buy the all the parts at anywhere near the price of
buying something suitable, you need to rethink somewhat.

Also all the disparate skills required to make a good job of
designing a presumably rechargeable portable make it
a far harder a task than it may initially seem.

Not rechargeable, I know its a horrible idea to try to charge li ions in series. I'm an ecig user, we'll versed in lithium ions, and have the batteries and charger already. I will need:
2 speakers, amp, on-off-on switch, battery box for 2x 18650batteries, 5v dc and 3.5mm jacks (female), and misc wiring and connectors. Housing will be easy to take care of.

No.
I'm talking about two 18650 batteries in series, possibly with a 5v regulator, that are removed for charging. I'm thinking about 5v dc input so it can be run off the wall as well as off batteries

Also Parts Express has inexpensive small speakers, usually in their closeout section.

The amplification part is where you have some issues.

My application is a pair of powered headphones that will also act as a portable stereo. For amplification I'm looking at the PAM8403 though I'm wondering if there is something better?

Go and find a pair of powered speakers and gut 'em out.
Sony has some models, powered by 4 X1.5V cells .
Usually there's an (stereo) input jack and an output jack for the HP.
The power switch inserts the amplifiers if the signal is too scarce ( the
amplifiers are DIL 8 pins OP Amps , similar to the famous LM 380..TBA..Eerr )
And inserting the HPs in the jack disables the speakers .
Those are obviously to be changed, preferring still low impedance ones
( 4Ω or less ...you can find in some radios the 3.2Ω models ) to
obtain more power output, though at a major drain of current from the
batteries is the norm
With a 10-20 dB 'noise floor' like night listenings in room the thing might
also sound good ....
