The email I received from the moderator after I registered said I was going to be under observation to ensure that I was not a 'bot' of any sort and that I was intelligent and respectful.
I quick email to my wife would no doubt have elicited the following responses (in the above order), as 'Yes he is', 'No he isn't' and 'No he isn't'. She has a very low opinion of me it seems. I digress. Have had two parallel careers most of my life - one in IT sales and the other in music. Am now just a peripatetic brass & woodwind teacher and still an inveterate all round DIYer. My current system I bought new in the '80s and it's still going strong. It consists of a Michel Engineering Gyrodek with Logic Datum S tonearm and Audio Technica OC9 cartridge, Beard CA35 & P35 valve amps, NAD CD player, NAD tuner and Magneplanars. Recently I've added a valve headphone amp from Bravo Audio. Jury still out on that one. The purchase of that little lot was a complete aberration but coincided with a cash windfall whilst changing jobs. How I got away with it I'll never know (especially the Magneplanars). Still together after 34 years in harness though (plus a few before that trying to avoid it all), so she can't hate me that much. Leaving out all the pros, cons, justifications etc behind the following decision, I have decided to digitise all our LPs (many hundreds), and CDs (even more hundreds) and move to a hard disc based system using Apple's iTunes/Airplay technology but maintaining all the Beards and Magneplanars along the way. This means that I have 'accidentally' created the need for amplification (valve, of course), and speaker projects in several other rooms in the house that we will want to stream music to. I also need a (valve based) solution for the A/D conversion from Gyrodek to PC so that I can record all the LPs to hard disc. Suggestions welcome. Also, I have always wanted to add a sub to the Magneplanars and would dearly love a second matching (bridged) P35 (or P100), to drive it. The cost though! So maybe another self build amp needed here too. Happy days! |

Many thanks fro the welcomes.
c2cThomas - I'd like to take you up on that offer of a pint. What they say about Brass players and beer is only too true in this case. Am currently banned from driving in the State of Michigan for previous misdemeanours but am sure I could get to you from JFK without going there again! |

Planet10 - thanks very much for that suggestion - wasn't aware of the FA66 before.
Found one on eBay (UK) and have my bid in on it already! |
