I hope well.

I'm William. I've been in search of people who know what they are talking about when it comes to audio. I'm sure many of you have had the same beginning interest in audio as I have, with certain variables being different as time goes on.

I started out not knowing what good audio was. My first step into it was a pair of bose headphones. I loved those so much. So when it came time to get new computer speakers, I got bose. Now my music collection is getting to the point where I feel complete. Sure I add things here and there, but being older now, (compared to a naive 14 year old, Im 20 now) I would like to develop a good speaker system. The challenge for me is I am a college student, and I have a limited income. There are two things that matter to me when it comes to audio, sound, and cost. What does not matter to me is the looks, and it being new.

My dream is to be able to acquire reasonably priced used equipment, maybe make some, and get great sound. Maybe after being here awhile, I will change that.

If anyone just wants to say anything, I have open ears, no pun intended. If someone would be kind enough to point me in a good direction, maybe a particular board I should look on, that would be great.

Welcome to the forum William.

The way to get good speakers with little money, is to build them yourself. And you can't beat a simple full range speaker in bang for the buck.

Do you have access to tools and work area in which to build some things up? Some schools have work or hobby shops on or around the campus - perhpas something available over at one of the grad students houses or a local audio club. You can knock to gether some nice speakers for not tooooo much $$$ and there are always some old amps around to refurb or fix. Buuuut ya do need access to tools - and oh yeah - it helps if you know how to use 'em.

There are pleanty of us that can offer advice in just about any area of interest - all ya gotta do us ask.

Plenty of great used stereo equipment, just depends on how much you can afford.
Since this is a DIY forum, here is one suggestion for a DIY pair of loudspeakers at an acceptable price. Almost all you need for a nice pair of loudspeakers.

But you will need a pair of enclosures, either build or buy. If you decide to build your own, you need access to some basic woodworking tools. The wood materials, plywood, particle board, MDF, hardwoods etc, can be bought but there are always plenty of lumber scraps leftover at construction sites and cabinet shops. I have free reign at a local cabinet shop and you wouldn't believe how much gets thrown away.

Welcome, William, to the forum!
There many avenue's of different technologies here that I'm sure you will find interesting.
Some simple and some very intense and complicated.
Many can be realized with a tight budget In mind aswell.
Feel free to ask as many questions as you like as that is why we are all here as fellow diy'ers.
I hope that you find the comradery here enjoyable and enlightening as much as I do.
