Hello from ice cold Norway

I register -18 degrees c (about 0 F) outside as I sit here late at night enjoying this forum and the various threads.
I am a sound engineer of 44, I have worked in this industry since I was 16, more or less. Sound and film is my profession. My background starts with local radio stations in Oslo, a severe low-tech experience during the eighties. The tech factor increased dramatically in 1993 when I started working with Pro Tools doing radio commercials.
Since then I have done film sound on location and post, and today I am knee deep in "The Norwegian Television School" keeping 6 Pro Tools suites and a seemingly unlimited number of Final Cut Pro suites running.
My Hifi setup is obscure and reflects an engineer's approach to the matter;
A pair of Intelligent Sound loudspeakers (intelligentsound.se) and a pair of Carlsson Sonab OA5 speakers. These are hooked up to an Onkyo integrated amplifier, fed with signals from a Systemdek II X turntable and Spotify/iTunes/Pro Tools off my old Mac G5.
The sound is ok, and that is all I expect, being a father of three... Just wait 'til the kids move out! My heavy Sony power amp is itching in the garage...
But then I started thinking about building my own amp. I have spent some time lately making balanced/unbalanced converters both for digital and analog signals and I find so much pleasure in soldering and layout of these boxes. I have started thinking about a gainclone amp. They can be so simple and straight forward! I like that.
So, I guess you will find me lurking in this neighborhood for tips and trick in this matter. The LME49810 looks like a real beast, eh?

Hello Arcticboy - and Welcome to diyAudio!!!

The chip amps are a good place to begin your addiction!!! There will most probably be others to follow - each growing in power and refinement. Then everything will turn upside down and you will find your way venturing into the world of tube amps - and from there into class A amps. Somewhere in there the itch to build some speakers will arise and the cycle will repeat itself again. Then onto playing around with various music sources - turntables, CD's, modding the TT's, modding the CD's, building up a music server, upgrading the music server. Getting hold of a good mental health counselor, getting hold of a good marriage counselor, and so it goes!!!

RUN AWAY WHILE YOU CAN BEFORE YOU ARE ASSIMILATED!!! Alas - I'll still be here - see the attached photo.

BTW - most (well - all) of the old timers around here know that I am full of . I think they cut me some slack because I make them look good.

-but I have been there. Class A is not for me, and enough copper is sufficient to reproduce proper sound. Phase linearity is bliss, and tube absolutely positively produce distortion. It sounds great, sure, but the guys that mixed and mastered the stuff I listen to did so on plain, simple Genelec's, most likely... There is a great difference between average and sublime HiFi, but each step along the way is relative, personal and highly dependent on A/B testing. This is my view. To some it may provoke.
