Kind of new around here

Hello, I have been a member for a while, but have not really contributed anything. I looked up a old friend and found him on this board now, and he recommended I stay a bit, so I thought I would see what it is like around here.

I am interested primarily in mobile audio. I have a fairly large collection of old Phoenix Gold amplifiers from well before the days of Rodin audio. I have a few of the LE and bigger Soundstream amps as well. When I can, I purchase these amps in need of repair, refurbish them and add to my collection. Although my wife hates it, I think I have only resold 2 amps in the whole time I have been doing this

I have no formal education in analog electronics, but I read a lot and spend my time trying to learn form places like this board. I think I have a pretty good handle on the basics, but there is always more to learn.

I work shift work at a major chemical plant in Michigan. We make mainly silicone based raw materials, and are one of the largest suppliers to the semiconductor industry.

In my spare time I do a lot of fabrication, I own a fairly decent machine and welding/fabricating shop including a fairly good size CNC mill among other things. I always come up with hair brained things to build, but most of the time they end well for me. If you would like to see some pictures of some of my work I have done, then LMK and I will add some stuff to this thread.

Well, if you want to twist my arm about it . I will try to keep it short, but I am pretty proud of some of this stuff.







This is my custom built amplifier that is a tribute to the Phoenix Gold ZPA line. I have coined it the ZPA 0.8. It is a pair Ti800.1's, one of their later model (circa 2000 or so) 800 watt monoblock amplifiers in a single case. I still have one more of these I need to build then they are both off for powder coating. In the end it will be a matched pair with only the two in existence.





These are of a PG Zx600Ti amp that I converted to T-03 outputs. This was something I tackled long before I had any idea what I was doing. I am lucky it worked at all, but it does and continues to be my "bench amp" in my mad scientists workshop. It has been going strong for more than 4 years now. Unfortunately it still does not have it's case completely back in place. The replacement rail caps I chose for it were a few mms to tall and I haven't gotten around to swapping them out again.





This is a PG Ti1000.2 that had a PS failure and the mosfets took out the little "peninsula" of the board when they burned. I re-drew the damaged part of the board in Eagle Cad, cut the replacement PCB on my mill, cut the bad piece off the amp and soldered the new one in place using solder braid to provide a good strong low resistance joint between the old and new. It is not the prettiest, but the amp was not really repairable otherwise.



This is kind of blurry, it was a customer pic sent to me after the acrylic was installed. I did the acrylic and the aluminum surround. The amp is a factory PG MS22xx with fan shroud.





More customer pics, this is a PG MS1K, I did the aluminum and acrylic piece. He finished the aluminum and the wall art display is his alone as well.
