Hola from the UK,
Married white male seeks fun and interesting relationship with community that shares similar goals. Interests include B&W 803D/800D/HTM2D and Classe (aka B&W) Delta series kit, listening to music at ridiculous volumes and designing "stuff" (just about anything, really). I'm here because I have the upgrade bug and have realized that I'm never going to be able to justify the 30,000 quid system of my dreams [bloody family] and so, like any other bloke, I've had that [rather silly] thought that maybe, just maybe, I can build the speakers of my dreams for a fraction of the cost (my time isn't free but time spent not .*earning is time wasted). As a result, I'm hoping that community feedback will help me to avoid all of those costly design/build mistakes that inevitably come with the learning curve. Cheers, Dave. PS - .* is a regexp.

Thanks Cal; appreciate it. Also, what part of BC are you from? I misspent my youth in Vancouver (7 years) and Prince George (12 years; I'll accept offers of condolence on the last one).
![]() I only moved to the UK in '06 and have been surprised by how much of the hifi world is in the closet over here (or maybe I haven't looked hard enough). They have some magnificent manufacturers, but it just seems to be more difficult over here to buy/sell/trade kit. ![]() Cheers, Dave. |

Hi Dave - and Welcome to diyAudio!!!
![]() ![]() ![]() The good news is - yes you can discover how to build up some very nice speakers for a modest sum of money. There are some excellent designers and builders here (I am not one of 'em tho). The bad news is that this (design and building of the "perfect" system) is usually accomplished by most of us here after having built up several sets of speakers in ascending order of complexity and refinement. ![]() THEN - just as we have discovered the speaker that meets all of our desires SWMBO will inform you that there is no bloody way those things (plus amps, interconnects, turntables on wall mounts, etc.) are going to be allowed into her lounge room. ![]() I suggest that you consider a back-up plan that includes some decent headphones and amplifier. ![]() BTW - pay little or no attention to my musings - few do

Welcome to the forum Dave.
Cal is from Vancouver (well Surrey, part of Greater Vancouver). I'm across the water from the big smoke in Victoria... from what i've seen (never spent as much as 24 hrs in PG) condolences are probably appropriate dave

@Tony - yes, yes it is
![]() c2thomas - ah, it looks like I might have something to teach as well. The trick with SWMBO is to involve her in the design process. Pre-appeoval is king! I'm already pre- approved for the classe delta setup (she attached a condition to it, something about needing enuf money for them which I can safely ignore) ![]() And I already have pre-approval for the 803Ds. I simply talked about them every waking hr and eventually just said, "you know, I'd like to be able to enjoy sex again without hearing about your damned speakers. Just buy the stupid things so that I can get some sleep!". So it's really just all about how you present your argument. ![]() The only reason that I don't own them all already is that, evidently, not a vey successful jiggalo. This is where the process of "negotiation" fails me. Bit I'll keep at her on this one too. ![]() Dave. |
