Hey gang! I discovered this site a week ago and have been browsing it ever since. Figured I'd finally introduce myself. It's good to see the wealth of knowledge here.
I did competition car-fi installs as a hobby in the early/mid 90's but have really grown fond of home electronics more recently. I have a hodge-podge of equipement including an old tube amp gifted from dad some time ago and some car-fi speakers that I've adapted for home use. I look forward to learning more and sharing what knowledge I have. |

Hi, toenail
Sure this "gang" is huge and great! Can't keep my hands off of it myself. There's always something new to discover. Me think the tube guys and the car guys are going to fight to win you for your knowledge ![]() I’m sure SkinnyBoy will have a lot to tell you. Remember the days we had tube amps in our cars? /Hugo - Drives all-transistorised these days

There'll be no fighting over any knowledge I have!
Most of the car-fi experience was learned hands-on through trial and error, not through knowledge of electronics and the math required to competently design sytems. I would guess that being 8 years out of the loop would leave me a little behing the curve considering how technology keeps advancing. I am excited to learn more about my tube amp and some DIY speakers though. |

The tube amp is a Dynakit st70 that my dad purchased new in the late 60's. He passed it on to me when I graduated from HS in '88 and I had no appreciation for what that amp is until recently.
I had a leftover set of Boston Acoustics 5.2 Pro components from my car-fi days, as well as 2 JL Audio 12w0-8 ohm subs. I decided to build some 3-way towers with them before I new anything about the science involved. Needless to say handing off from a 5 1/4" to a 12" leaves a little to be desired. It's crossed pretty high at 150hz due to the poor enclosure that the Boston's are sitting in. Since the sub is mounted in the same baffle (in it's own enclosure) it's a reasonable hand-off but far from perfect. I'm driving the Boston's with the st70 and the subs with an NHT SA3. Now that I've found this site and some software I'm going to redesign the towers so that the Boston's play flat down to 55hz or so and use a remote sub. I found a great enclosure to build using the WinISD software but still have some questions (posted in the loudspeaker forum). |

I love the sound in it's current configuration, can't wait to hear it with upgrades. It gives an amazing sense of space, almost putting you in the environment where the music was originally played. A Google search netted me tons of info on the proper way to upgrade. Yet another project for me.
