Hello to everyone!

i am completely new to most DIY type stuff

i have no knowledge in building electronics, but i want to try my hand at making an amplifier from a kit. 41hz.com has some that seem simple. (amp 6 is what im looking at)

what i want to know is, what should i do before i attempt to anything like this? any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi m54,
No knowledge in building electronics - well that will make things a bit of a challenge - but we all started somewhere!! 1st off - in order to build electronics kits you will need to get a soldering station (or soldering iron) and learn how to solder. 2nd thing - when you are putting together amplifiers somewhere in the instructions you are going to be told to set the "bias voltage" for the amp and that is going to involve the use of a voltage meter (available for cheap at local Radio Shack or online at Parts Express, etc.). Now things are going to get interesting because you are going to start to learn the basics of electronics - just the most basic of things to start - like how to measure voltage. Soon you will find yourself going nuts reading stuff and buying equipment - only to be followed by more reading and more buying!! To support your craving for even better (eventually "the best") equipment you will need to get a good paying job and then spend your spare time designing and prototyping! Eventually you will find yourself alone, isolated and broke - BUT you will have a real kick a** stereo!!! GET OUT NOW BEFORE IT'S TO LATE!!! :joker:

Orrrrrrrrr - take a look at:
http://www.epemag.wimborne.co.uk/solderfaq.htm#howto
http://radiojove.gsfc.nasa.gov/telescope/soldering.htm
http://www.bcae1.com/ Really good info - wish I had access to something like this when I started out!!
http://www.lalena.com/Audio/ another good site for newbie's
http://www.lampizator.eu/ note: use of this site is restricted until you have spent 20 years screwing around in audio and are finally ready to get down to the business of doing things right. You will miss out on many years of learning the hard way, making mistakes, spending to much money, and winding up bitter and alone. :D :D :D

If I haven't managed to scare you off running to your nearest "big box" stereo store to buy a pre-packaged all - in - one "system" by now then I'm afraid that you may have been infected by the audio nut bug. In that case - Welcome to the forum!!

Hello "M", (in Bonds best voice)
Welcome to the nut farm!!!!!!!
I'm about 4 months ahead of you and my wife thinks I'm crazy....always reading DIYAudio.com stuff. The more you read the better questions you will have to ask!
Buy a couple of books on basic electronics. I bought a bunch. Some are Junk and Most are hard for us Newbs to grasp. So far I like: in no certain order...

Practical electronics ( a self teaching guide) by Morrison
Valve amplifiers and Building Valve Amplifers by Morgan Jones (only if interested in Tubes and glowing heaters ;) )

Getting Started In Electronics by Forrest Mims III (if you can get past the format...like a college rule notebook) good buy anyway.

Read the stickies from the MODS. they are there for a reason.

MOstlLY Be CaReFulL with high and mains voltages.

Don't be afraid to ask questions, but use the search enging first.
Welcome,
Ron
