PSU for SS combo

Like, I was wondering. Which is better for a solid state guitar/bass amp, a larger transformer with lower rails (hence much lower max output but no sagging) or a smaller trafo with higher rails and perhaps twice the capacitance in the PSU. Huge power peaks but sagging if driven hard.
Yeah, I know they're both compromises but that's the choice I have now.

The over all power rating of the transformer is what matters most. A sagging supply is generally not desirable in SS amplifiers, bass or otherwise.
Granted, regulating the supply rails on a power amp is expensive and consumes more space. But, making the filter caps too large can cause issues with inrush current. I recommend supply rails from +/- 24V to +/-40V for amplifiers < 150W out.
