Just cured a problem with my Fender Blues Jr. The amp would make sounds like a bad cable, when smacked, and the sound was greatest when the power tubes were tapped. After using a known good tube to test if it was the tubes themselves, I had to use an eye loupe to actually see the cracked solder joint on one of the tube sockets. Fluxed and resoldered the joint and, problem gone.
Just a reminder to look for the (somewhat) obvious before mystifying your problem.
