I put together a 2-12 cabinet and want to put a metal grill on it. I have a 1/4" diamond-hex pattern in mind. I've searched, but am only coming up with cloth recommendations. Granted, I don't want the sound to be noticably affected by the grill, but this is not an audiophile application and I want some heavier-duty protection for the drivers. Does anyone know where to get some material for this? thanks

That is the diamond hex pattern, but I'm looking for a finer material and one with less mass per area. There is so much material on those that I'm concerned about the affect on the sound. I can only think that alot of the sound will be reflected from those grills back onto the drivers and would muddy the sound. I actually have something almose exactly like that on a subwoofer, but decided against them for this application.
I should have been more descriptive in my initial post. I'm really looking for a place to get some bulk material that I can cut a rectangular piece from to cover the whole cabinet face. |

Google "perforated metal" or "wire cloth" or "wire mesh"

Actually, what you are looking for is called "expanded metal," so google that. That is where a sheet of metal has little cuts made in it and then the sides are pulled apart resulting in those diamond shaped openings you want.
Your local welding shop or possibly a sheet metal shop should be able to help. For that matter Home Depot might. CErtainly one of those screen door protectors could be adapted. |

Look under "steel" in the Yellow Pages; you might have to buy an entire sheet if you get it from a wholesaler. Or try hardware stores; they often sell "hobby-sized" pieces of steel (at a large markup).
For cutting it, I used a cutoff disk in a Skilsaw, but a reciprocating saw or sabre saw with a good metal-cutting blade should work (without the nifty shower of sparks, though). |
