So im just wondering whats the difference between a distortion and an overdrive pedal.

Tough question. As far as i see it, the classic explanation is that the general idea of overdrive effects is that they are used to drive a (tube) preamp into distortion - hence the name overdrive. A distortion effect, on the other hand, is expected to produce similar distortion tones by itself.
