It will display a number from 1 to n.
You will need to look up your transistors spec to see what typical Hfe is.

I just put a 2N4403 PNP transistor in the meter.
40V 600mA 625 mW Shows 269 on the meter. What is that telling me?

The DC gain of the transistor is 269.
Sounds good to me but check your transistor spec to be certain. The spec usually has a range of possible values like 40-100.

So Current at the Collector of 150mA should produce 100 to 300 hfe, correct?

Now if I were checking a transistor with the same specs as this transistor and I got a reading of say 310 or higher that could well be the problem or part of the problem.

It would be unusual for it to be that high.
Usually if there is a problem you will get a low figure like 1 which probably means there is a short in the transistor.
