So what problems(be as specif as possible) do you see in, say, replacing the power amp section of this: http://sound.westhost.com/project27.htm with a gainclone?

Actually, not that many.
The biggest problem you will face with a gainclone are the output stage limiters. Unlike most music, the guitar has the ability to put in a lot of dynamic material into the equipment. It may drive the output stage into clipping easily, and we know how bad a gainclone sounds when the protection switches in. Some of Fender's smaller models used a TDA 2030 output stage (!) so yes, it can be done, so long as it's only used at lower volumes for practice etc. As for sound, it's personal taste, money, etc. |
