this is my first time here and i was hoping people might be able to give me some input. i just picked up the 15w crate palomino v16 tube amp off craigslist for a pretty decent price. the reverb was broken so i repaired that but after hearing some complaints about the reverb online i decided to put in a much larger reverb tank i had pulled from an old organ. the reverb is not quite as long (even though its much bigger with longer spings so i thought maybe this is due to the springs being old and lacking tension?) but the tone seems to be much fuller so i stuck with it.
i also went ahead and replaced the groovetube el84's with 7189's from another organ. to my understanding the main difference is that they are rated for 400v max plate instead of 300v (didn't note a significant difference but possible volume boost?) so i also replaced the sovtek 12ax7's with the 12ax7's from the organ and i noticed a bit of difference in tone. i'm not an afficianado and very well may miss a lot of the subtle variations. just curious if anyone had any thoughts or tips. |
