back in the 70's i saw a mic setup that was very interesting that is very easy to do, but it takes 2 mics to do it. two identical mics are mounted on the stand like over-under shotgun barrels, and the mics are wired 180 degrees out of phase. the vocalist has to sing into the top one. the setup cancels out everything that hits both mics in phase. it's simple but effective, but it takes two mics of the same model and a modified mic stand to make.

Yes, the Stones used it for a while. Trouble is, as you get closer to the mic you want to sing into, you block off signal to it, so the gain of the other mic goes up.
So feedback risk is increased, and extraneous pickup amplified, when you are most needing the gain. I suppose this is true of all noise-cancelling mic systems. And, if you simply wire them out of phase, instead of running into two polarity inverted inputs with separate equalisation, you're almost always short of low frequencies, as these, due to their longer wavelengths, cancel out much sooner. |
