I'm considering adding a headphone jack to my amp that I built. Any suggestions. Do most commercial receivers drive headphones from the same power amps that power the speakers or do they use a separate lower power amps for the headphones? I want mine to automatically disconnect the speakers when headphones are plugged in.

Most commercial amps just use an attenuator on the power amp output. See here:
http://sound.westhost.com/project100.htm If you want to build a small headphone-specific amp, you could do so. You could even just connect something like BUF634T to the output of your preamp stage, for example. |
