Hi there,
I'm a newbie - haven't soldered anything and have limited knowledge... I ordered a Audidigit 2020 (http://www.audiodigit.com/index.php?section=35) a while ago and have never used it. Now I want to get into good headphones. I was wondering if I could set this up as a headphone amplifier? If so, how do I go about wiring the speaker connectors to the headphone jack? Thanks, Herb |

Well class D is not actually what you want with good headphones, class A is the best you can get for them.
I think that simple 4 opamp amp will put class D to shame with headphones.

Herb,
The TA2020 chip has bridged outputs so I don't think they will work with headphones (which have a common ground for both channels.) You may want to have a look a the many headphone amplifier projects here: http://headwize.com/projects/index.htm There's also an excellent page on building the cmoy headphone amp: http://tangentsoft.net/audio/cmoy-tutorial/ Cheers, Dennis |

I am not sure why one would need class D as headphone amps. you can get a simple class A with a few resistors and capacitors to drive pretty much any headphone to ear-splitting levels.
Why class D? |

Thanks for the responses. I'm totally new to this and did not realize it was not suited to the task. I had it lying around unused and thought icould put it to work.
I'll explore Class A. Thannks. Herb |

I have done a few class-D designs, both for headphones(400mW or so) and for normal speaker (50-100W range). The biggest reason behind class-D for headphones is efficiency. Since headphones are used in battery operated devices a lot of time, more efficiency = longer battery life. Hope that helps. By the way, im curios as to what a "good" spec is for headphone amplifier. The prototype I made was 100dB of DNR and 0.03% THD+N @ 137mW (32 Ohm load) and 0.15%THD+N @ 446mW (8 Ohm load). Im wodering if anyone out there has any insight on whether this is a good performance or not. |

Well ... you asked for it .. and it looks like it's coming ;-)!
See the announcement of the "TubeHead" tube headphone amplifier ... looks very promising! |
