Has anyone used the Jaycar 12AX7 preamp kit as a headphone amp? What modifications were needed?

Don't bother. You need a much gruntier tube for headphone use with lower output impedance. As a linestage the design is the biggest *** I have seen in ages (use a totally lacklustre tube with far more gain than you you could possibly use and then wrap ********* of feedback round it to get it back down to manageable levels). You would probably be far better off with solid state.
There are plenty of good tube headphone designs out there if you do a google or a trawl of the forum. regards pm |

This would work if you could find high impedance (z = several K ohms) head phones and these headphones usually were not "hi fi" or you could try to find a suitable matching transformer to drive the more common lo z headphones.
As the valve pre amp has already coloured the signal, you could use a clean solid state amp to drive your headphones without adding too much additional colouration to the net result. Yes it does sound different in a nice way on the guitar and no it doesn't improve my playing ;o( |
