The turns are a function of the impedance. VERY low impedance is low turn count. Also fat wire. The "squeeze" is when the wire must be so thick that it will not bend to go around the core-- in EI cores we use multiple parallel strands or spend for ribbon wire. In doughnut cores the center hole can be a limit. My gut says his winding is probably fine for the purpose, especially considering he can drive it with some "power amp" which can deliver extra current if the inductance is indeed too low.
