Tube or solid state?
How much do you want to spend?
Bottlehead Crack is a good headphone amp, IMO and has good instructions.

You won't save much by buying a 'kit' vs a built version if you are looking at the cheaper solid state HP amps, and with the 'ready to use' amps you have some warranty protection.

Cruise over to head-fi and you will have reading for weeks...
;-)

i'm not entirely qualified to answer the kit or type but i will say that unless you can solder and have a semi decent iron then i would start by learning to solder first. saying that i use a £14 temp adjustable one i got off ebay and it does the job just dandy but i can also weld and braze.

i was told recently to build a cmoy amp as it would help me understand things a bit better. How to Build the CMoy Pocket Amplifier

or you can do this as you don't even need a circuit board DIY Enthusiast Discussion Thread - DIY AMPS, Custom Cables & More - Page 83 - www.hardwarezone.com.sg

one you start there is no going back... its addictive lol

If breaking any rules im sorry.Do you see any problems for a newbie in making this it seems straight forward enough

mick

I've listened to one of those for years until it recently gave up.
I liked it very much.

For SQ I'd swap to Wima or similar filmcaps where possible ( the smaller caps lets say under 1uF),

I had a 2x15 1A toroidal transformer powering mine.

When it comes to solder, my favorite by far is the 60/38/2 (2% Copper).

This folded cascode job? Why not.

I don't really like the 75 ohm output impedance though (and who knows whether it's stable without that), unless you just happen to have headphones that appreciate this kind of value, plus I highly doubt you'd get anything even resembling original 2SK170s with a kit like this (there's like a gazillion fakes of these now-rare discontinued devices out there, none of them being remotely close in their characteristics, the only known substitute is the Linear Systems LSK170).
