Default Elektor improved headphone preamp. Is it good quality?

Hello,
I have found this little hybrid preamplifier from the reliable elektor magazine and I was wondering if it is worth it to build for using it with modest quality (20Euros) 32R headphones.

I do not expect super high quality, but I am not using electrostatic or expensive headphones anyway.
I wanted a better preamplifier for music listenning using a cd as a source, than plugging the headphones in a computer speakers out port (mp3). The sound of onboard AC97 is crap.

Euro 20 headphones won't exactly be audiophile so really any amplifier will do.

It'll come down to what you want to spend. The CMOY is cheaper and will do an admirable job.

Thank you,
I liked the elektor design because it uses a low +B tube (of course) and it is discrete class-A.
I do not disagree that an opamp might be able to do a better job than these simple discrete circuits sometimes, but it is not as neat as discrete or tubed design.

I do not care about super high quality, I just need a better quality headphone amplifier than these cheap Chinese opamp-ed.
I might get a better headphones pair later on, but not a super expensive one.

What do you think, should I go for the Elektor design? (I have no reviews currently about it's performance)

If it's cheap enough try it. Decent Class A into a headphone load at headphone power is not difficult to do well.

Have a look at the JLH Headphone amp, it also is a Class A amplifier of good pedigree without the drawbacks of a bottle.

Elektor copyright article removed from post #1. If you can show you have the permissions to reproduce this work then it can be re-instated.
