The DAO SE all-FET Class-A ZGF Headphone Amplifier

Hi patrick, after my experience with your f5ha, i am keen on building this circuit. No doubt it will be jaw droppingly good as your other headphone amp has proven to be. But its hard for me to source the power jfet here. Ill order them overseas. Is there any alternative i can use meanwhile? I will take the trade off is sq if i can get it working asap woth found parts. And how hot does 1014 get? Is it possible to heatsink it by soldering it on the pcb?

Thank you in advance

If the question is whether there will be a batch 2, then I guess earliest Nov. 2018, if at all.
And it depends on how many subscribers with the required skills.

As far as I know none of the batch 1 subscribers is close to finish.
Probably most of them are still awaiting a custom designed case by one of the subscribers.
A design that I would be proud of.
When it is finished it will certainly be one of the most desirable headphone amps one can build or buy.

But of course anyone else trying to sell anything will say the same.
So I better leave you to judge for yourself, whenever someone from GB1 is ready to show it off and tell you how it sounds.

;)

A second prototype of the balanced version is being built by another skilled DIY'er, and demonstrates extremely low distortion.
-110dB 3rd harmonics at 1Vrms 1kHz into 50R load.
2nd harmonics is -130dB, demonstrating excellent device matching.
Noise floor is below -130dBV broadband, and 50Hz harmonics are all below -120dBV.
Remember that this is all ZGF (zero global negative feedback).

I have been asked by PM today about PCBs, documents and Gerber files for the DAO SE.

First of all thank you for your interest.

We have PCBs in stock, but have no time to sort and ship them for individual requests.
Also it is not just about a set of PCBs, but also about the building support required, especially for the DAO.
So we only want to support a second batch properly when we are finished with the first batch.
I think none of them is any where near finishing, which is why I said November in post #327.

As to incomplete documentation, all subscribers will eventually receive a complete set.
But if you are skilled in circuitry, you can essentially find everything required for a 1:1 build here and at the F5-HA and SHPP threads (e.g. for the cross feed).
F5 Headamp ?
XEN SHPP -- Simple Headphone Protection

And we will not publish our Gerber files, now or in the foreseeable future.

Our apologies for not being more forthcoming,
Patrick

Quite a few years ago, I was challenged to build an even higher power version of the DAO for the HE6.
Also recently there is a trend for headphone amps with power up to 8W.
So just for fun, I obliged.

This uses the original 330mA triode cell, on +/-30V rails.
Weighs 11.5kg, with 150VA toroidal transformer.
Will surely power any headphones other than electrostatics.

:)

We are now allowed to see the work of one GB1 member (this one is not from XEN).
His design, his batch production, for those lucky GB1 subscribers only.
He even charged less than they cost him to make.
What dedication !!!!!

The rest speaks for itself. Absolutely gorgeous.

:)

Yes, all subscribers decided for Lemo 2B 4 pin.
Much better connector than XLR.

There are also a lot of details such as internal ventilation, volume knob, etc.
They are all well hidden so as not to obstruct the aesthetics.

The brushing and matt anodising is very well done.
We know how difficult it is.
