Adding Volume Control

For the unusual I have something for you. I purchased a "Driveway Patrol" driveway monitor to use to detect motion. It flashes lights and had a speaker that made a beeping alarm when motion was detected. To make the sound personal I disconnected the tiny speaker and hooked up some simple earbud headphones to the outputs that went to the speaker. Like a dummy, I put the earbuds in my ear to try it out and almost lost my hearing in one ear! It was so loud that it could be heard all the way across the house. So, my question is, how do I reduce the volume, or better yet, put a volume control on it?
