I don't believe the cells have protection circuitery, and was hoping to be able to get the circuits somewhere... if you have any ideas, I'm all ears

My main question remain... how to select?

Which is mainly a schematics to put 16850 lipos to a cmoy amp; anyone has experience with it?

It seems like a good idea.
Yes there's a real advantage from doing otherwise. The performance is well-documented. The price/performance ratio is probably unsurpassable. The range of headphones driven is very wide.

If you want to be well informed about how to pick a headphone amp, read everything on the nwavguy's website. His alias here is RocketScientist and he has provided troubleshooting support for the amp.

No overpowering reason not to put 18650 Lipos in a cmoy if you are using primary cells (I've only ever seen rechargeable 18650s though) or an external charger, you could use six for a +/- 12.6V dual rail supply. If rechargeable, protected cells are less trouble in many ways, but protected cells drop out suddenly so you might want to use some kind of monitoring system to make sure that both rails turn off to prevent any offset voltages getting to the headphones.

I recently built a Cmoy for similar reasons, my iPhone just didnt have the juice to drive my Sennheiser hd238s even though they are marketed for use with the iphone/ipod. I highly recommend you check out the TangentSoft Cmoy tutorial, there is a wealth of info on that site about not only the Cmoy but headphone amps and DIY audio in general.

A few pics of my Altoids tin amp. Im using a tle2082 powered by a single 9v w/ a discrete rail splitter, gain = 11, and its dc coupled

Currently thinking about getting PCBs from JDS Labs. As much as I like perfboards, how flexible and cheap they are, I am starting to have nightmares about wiring them O_O

The JDS labs boards seems OK, and are rather cheap. I am thinking I could switch to charger circuit afterwards.

Funny you should mention JDS im about to place an order for the o2 board. The CmoyBB boards look good and for $5 i guess ya cant go wrong, should save ya a few ours of work and look neater then my mess of wires in a box. Actually the wiring is the easy part, getting it all mounted in the Altoids tin is where the real fun begins haha. Good luck with your build.
