Default Shure E2C-N Plug Replacement

For the last two years my beloved Shure E2C-N 3.5mm right angled plug has been faulty so I wrote to Shure to enquire about the cost of repair or replacement. The E2-C model has now been replaced by the SE215 which could be supplied at a cost of 64.96p inc VAT after the original E2C-N had been returned.

After a quick hunt in the parts bin I found two rather nice gold plated 3.5 stereo plugs but they seemed rather large with the aluminum cover on. Using a watchmakers lathe I turned the thread and front bezel down just enough for the heatshrink to sit neatly on the thread and flush to the bezel.

I have attached three photos with the
- Original Shure right angled plug on the left
- Modified plug in the centre
- Un-modified plug and cover on the right

Picture List
  1. The bezel and thread have been turned down
  2. The cable has been cut to length and the ends tinned
  3. The completed plug with the heatshrink on

Please note : The Shure cable is VERY high quality with very fine copper strands and synthetic filament weave which has to be separated before the ends could be tinned. My x4 eye glass was not strong enough so I used the microscope, this is the hardest part of the job.

I'm sure on a second attempt I can get the heatshrink MUCH neater.
