I want to build a simple amp as a first project. I've read that the cmoy headphone amp design is supposed to be easy to build, but is the design any good?
Design instructions here: http://tangentsoft.net/audio/cmoy-tutorial/
Schematic available here: http://tangentsoft.net/audio/cmoy-tutorial/misc/cmoy-tangent-sch.pdf
Is it a good first project is really what I'm asking I suppose.
Thanks
Sam

That's a pretty ideal 1st project. Battery powered means it's virtually impossible to kill yourself
Seriously, this should be very a satisfying build. If you put the op-amp in a socket, then you can easily swap out different types to listen to the difference. Many dual op-amps have the standard pin-out.
Just double check the polarity and wiring before you 1st power up.
Good luck!

Agreed
I agree. This is a good first project and it actually is very good sounding. And using batteries you will not get any annoying hum. Pluse, it will teach you the intro skills you need to move up the ladder.
I loaned mine to an "audiophile" friend and he won't give it back.
