Default headphone question

Wasn't sure where to post this as it'd to do with headpones, but speakers are the closest thing.

OK, trying to fix my headphones, the wiring's gone in the minijack (when you bend the the cable protection it cuts out). So I got another jack and snipped the old one off. But instead of finding nice wires to connect to, I'm confronted by these metalic looking shield-like wires with fibre inners. I can't solder to these, so:

What are these wires and

How do I join them to new the nire jack with copper wires?

I'm pretty sure you can actually solder those. You'll need to prime them by smearing some molten solder over them so that it burns through the enamel, and don't worry about the fibres.

If I remember correctly, the connections from the tip to the base respectively are: right (red), left (blue), and common ground (white or black something like that).
