iTunes/WMP/etc -> USB -> SPDIF -> digital input to receiver/pre

I'm using something alike, built on veroboard. I use it for playing music from my laptop which doesn't have an spdif out. Monkeys audio or other lossless music formats played with foobar2000 go to my rotel surround preamp which i use as a dac.

it;s hard to get a bit perfect spdif signal though... 2 channel audio is always routed through kmixer (unless you use something like kernel streaming or an asio wrapper), ac3-like formats aren't supported by the current usb audio wdm driver but dts multichannel works great.

there's probably a whole lot more information to be found on this subject at head-fi.

Paolo, why don't you start a new thread with details of your interface? I'm sure there are many, (me included), that would like to have a look at your implementation.
