There is a USB -> SPDIF pcb group buy over at head-fi. The corresponding diyaudio link is here:

http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=595155

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

It is based upon the TI, PCM2902 chip. Shipping and fees will be £1.50 internationally, and £1 to the UK, regardless of the number ordered. Please note, this design has NOT been prototyped, you are buying as is!

Current price for 75 boards: €2.04 ($2.72)

The head-fi group buy link is here!

The original project log is here

If you aren't registered at head-fi.org ... pm Nisbeth and I'm sure he'll be able to transfer your details to guzzler at head-fi.org :)

It will give you S/PDIF output from the USB port of a computer using any OS that natively supports USB (WinXP, Linux, Mac OSX etc). Particularly handy for laptops, or PCs with no digital output to a DAC.

g

..and from the PCM2902 you can have also S/PDIF input and analog in/out.

In this project these features are not implemented, but the chip's pins are there, and working ;) (although it's not so funny soldering them!)

I used the PCM2902 family chips in another project (a complete USB soundcard) and it works really fine.

I'm using something alike, built on veroboard. I use it for playing music from my laptop which doesn't have an spdif out. Monkeys audio or other lossless music formats played with foobar2000 go to my rotel surround preamp which i use as a dac.

it;s hard to get a bit perfect spdif signal though... 2 channel audio is always routed through kmixer (unless you use something like kernel streaming or an asio wrapper), ac3-like formats aren't supported by the current usb audio wdm driver but dts multichannel works great.

there's probably a whole lot more information to be found on this subject at head-fi.

Paolo, why don't you start a new thread with details of your interface? I'm sure there are many, (me included), that would like to have a look at your implementation. :)

Well.. ok, I'll do as soon as I have some spare time.

In the meantime, I posted some pictures on this thread at Head-Fi:

http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/showpost.php?p=1238932&postcount=67

and some other pictures are on my website (see [WWW] button below :) )

Bye
