Hi Jean Paul & unixdeveloper (Hello to everyone esle too)
I'm checking parts accordind to the published BOM, the order will be placed at Mouser's. BTW some questions to ours experts. 1° - Posted BOM seems to content typos 01 -> 5 caps (C1-2-5-7-30) but 7 in Qty column... 06 -> 4 caps (C16-23-31-10B) but 2 in Qty column... 2° - Alternative Parts at Mouser's 06 -> Same size Polymer - Ref : 647-RR71C101MDN1 - 7 mOhms only ! 17 -> 0R Thick Film - Ref : 667-ERJ-6GEY0R00V - No 0R thin film 0805... 20 -> Alternatives : 926-LP2985AIM5-36 (NS/Ti) or 926-LP2985AIM536NOPB (NS/Ti) 21 -> Alternatives : 595-LP2985-33DBVTG4 (Ti) or 511-LD2985BM33 (ST) 3° - BOM for the PSU, when available ![]() Nice to read your answers and informations Thanks for your help and input Phil Last edited by korben69; 25th June 2012 at 04:45 PM. |

No, don't use LP2985, it has 30 µV noise so it is just slightly better than 78XX regs. It is one of the worse regs in 3.3 V for audio. AFAIK MIC5205 is less noisy or use the good ADP151 (9µV noise) but unfortunately there is no 3.6 V version of that one. You need 3.6 V for the ES9023 to squeeze the best out of it. If you use ADP151 you could measure the ones you have and use the one that has 3.3 V or more for the ES9023. I bought some of them and they varied but most of them were exactly 3.3 V. The ES9023 likes 3.3 V and even better 3.6 V. This is essential for the charge pump as that one has to generate -3.3 V. If is it lower clipping can occur with low impedance load.
With ADP151 results are otherwise fine and you can omit the 470 pF caps. Input and output caps have to be changed too with ADP151 ! Also input and output cap must be the same value. I used 1 uF PPS film caps. One of my prototypes was made with 4 x ADP151 and it did sound very good on 3.3 V. I even thought it was slightly better than an all MIC5205 type but also caps were different so I can not give a neutral verdict. Remember that R11 also has to be another value depending on V+ of the ES9023. A lot of words. In short: if you want the best use MIC5205 with ADP151 as a fine second choice. IMO you should choose for the best when you build a DAC otherwise building one yourself does not make sense.

Hi JP.
How about replaCing U3 with a 5V reg MIC5205-5.0YM5 TR instead of the 3.6. Do you think the chip ESS9023 will be ABLE TO HANDLE THE EXTRA VOLTAGE? jUST SOME THOUGH IF WE CANNOT GET THE 3.3v VERSION OF mic5205. tHANKS AND REGARDS\ KEYBOARD ACTING CRAZY!!! |

We will stick to the Official BOM concerning MIC5205-3.3v and 3.6v.
A solution has been found ![]() Cheers |

I know the dac is spdif, I searched the thread for i2s and didn't find much. I would just like to know if there's any place at all in the dac board where i2s input could be "grafted"? Thanks.

Yes, the whole S/PDIF section can be ignored and i2s input can be fed to the DAC. Please take a look at the build guide which I will be mailing out to all members today.
