Another thing is that a synchronized logic design (the I2S to PCM board) doesn’t care about how many stages it was going through. For there is a re-clock at finial stage,as well as intermediate stages, any accumulated jitter will be clock out, no matter how many stages in front of it. At this point, digital logic is totally different from analog.

2. PCM timing stops clock after left and right data shifted (at same time) into TDA1541/A, which theoretically can lower the overall noise level introduced from digital section into analog section.

3. I2S transmits left and right data sequentially which will half the maximum performance of TDA1541/A, that's why TDA1541 can’t achieve 384KHz with I2S input format.

Some reports could also be found to support my analyses.

For a simple DAC such as TDA1541/A, I2S mode may already be good enough. But to get the last drop of juice, simultaneous (PCM) mode is really worth giving a try.

Hi Ian,

your hypothesis could be right, but any re-clocking circuit adds jitter itself.
I have never seen a detailed schematic of the TDA, but from its block diagram I presume it acts the data splitting starting from the BCK (6.4 MHz max).
Well, if all the system works at BCK frequency the TDA have its MCLK input, the BCK itself, and so its logic operates at MCLK.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I cannot find any evidence that the TDA internal logic works worse than any other external logic when operates at the same MCLK.
Of course, it needs a very clean MCLK close to its pin, but this is another story.

As you know I ordered some I2S to PCM boards, so I'll do a comparison between the two operation mode and I'll report my impressions (I cannot do a measurement)...
... when I'll find the time to do that

Its not true. Synchronous reclocking used by Ian greatly lowers jitter of I2S signals. Ofcourse I2S after synchronous reclocking isn't jitter free - it has jitter of XO acumulated with jitter generated by FF, thats why Ian uses POTATO Ghz FF which has one of the lowest induced jitter available.
Other thing is asynchronous reclocking with clock not related to any of I2S signals - it adds jitter but it can be compared to dithering used in computer graphics or in audio and depending of used reclocking frequency can bring some relative improvement (output jitter character not related to source jitter, to content of binary audio signal etc)

Synchronous reclocking used by Ian is essential since the FPGA adds some jitter to the I2S signal, regardless from the quality of the original signal.
POTATO's FF has a propagation delay around 2ns, so maybe a low jitter but not jitter free.
IMHO, when the BCK is also the MCLK the DAC can be fed directly with I2S signal, without any additional stage that still injects jitter, since the internal logic of the 1541A operates at MCLK frequency.
