I appreciate all the support that I have been receiving from everyone so far.
I must give thanks to DIYAudio.com, the people that conceived this forum, BWRX for mentioning that I could post this in the group buy section and to John for his time and measuring this unit. Pricing information: Price per pair: $30 Price per unit: $15 Price per pair (over 8 pairs): $28 East Coast shipping for 1 pair: $16 West Coast shipping for 1 pair: $18 UPS actual combined shipping/packing costs are charged +-$1USD 7Lbs/pair average shipping weight. International shipping is available on request. Payments can be arranged through money order or paypal. matlowd4 |at| yahoo.com Contact information: AIM: OlogyAudio MSNIM/email matlowd3 |at| hotmail.com ![]() ![]() ![]() This graph shows consistency between units: ![]() I have zaph's measurements posted now which can be seen at my photo bucket until the comparison application is updated: http://s8.photobucket.com/albums/a44/OlogyAudio/Z55/ They are not as awesome as I expected, but are definitely not bad by any means... The frequency response deviated between the sample and the production quite a bit, for this reason I'm going to avoid pulp mixes as well as textile domes in the future to help out batch to batch consistency. I hear this issue plagues every engineer at one point or another in their career so I intend to make sure it only happens once... I will stick with more consistent processes at least until I can afford the time to watch over the mixes and coatings in person. The distortion below 80hz could stand to be a bit better but in all it looks to do fairly well at the price point. I have also revised the 1 way xmax down to 5mm as a more conservative estimate based on the capability of the suspension. http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a44.../Ology1-HD.gif Comparing with the seas W15CY001 the shortcomings are obvious: http://www.zaphaudio.com/5.5test/Seas-W15CY001-HD.gif It is more fair to compare against the Dayton Aluminum given the price: http://www.zaphaudio.com/5.5test/Dayton-DA135-HD.gif The peak at 4khz can be dealt with, without too much issue. I also think the dip in the frequency response helps mask the 3rd harmonic distortion associated with it since my ears aren't registering much in the way of anomalies there. This unit was also surface mounted for the measurements. I'm playing with several designs at the moment but I would like to see what other people can come up with as well. I will be heading back to The Ohio State University fairly soon and I will likely only be able to make a shipment once or twice a week. The speakers were all mislabeled so I test every unit after pulling off the badging so this should eliminate the problem of defective units right out of the box. I have already tested all of them for rubbing voice coils however that was not an extensive test. All proceeds from this project will help fund the high value high excursion 6.5": ![]() ![]() The 6.5” will fund future R/D. The 6.5" is very close to being ready and the price will be in the $40-50/ea range. I will make a thread dedicated to this project shortly. My goal is to provide high value units to the DIY community and to help push the envelope of technology as well as gain some practical industry experience while still in school. I also hope to make the ideas and tools surrounding transducer design more available to the determined DIYer. I have a dream that product development will eventually be driven by the determined and creative individuals of technical forums working hand in hand with career engineers and companies in all forms of industry. --Dylan Matlow |
