Overtoe V.S. BSC

Recently I built a Martin's brilliant MLTL for Fostex FE207E.
I notice that high frequency is attenuated out of axes.
So if I place the speakers in overtoe arrangement and put them against the wall.
Do I need a BSC suggested in Martin's design?
(Since good quailty inductors are very expensive and hard to get in Taiwan)
(I use 41Hz Tripath T-amps)

I have not Fostex,but another brand MLTL fullrangers.

With my setup,I have find out the over toeing does work to tame the treble.But I still prefer to use BSC,this way the toe in (or out) is not dependant of anything else except the kind of stereo image you prefer.


You could try line-level BSC between your amp and pre amp.If you are using passive pre,you will probably also need simple buffers,made with op-amps or fets.

Although passive BSC also works fine and is easy to build.


EDIT: I read your question again,trust your ears.If you feel the sound is too thin try the BSC.If not,there is no point in using it.

The question is very difficult to answer as nobody knows how your room behaves or how bright or bass heavy sound you prefer...

For me, it is hard to decide, too.
As I sad...buying a good pair of inductors is not so easy here.
Since I do not have inductors and BSC.
I can't tell if I like the speakers with BSC or without it.

So, maybe I simple my question:
I would like a flat response curve as BSC do to MLTL speakers.
Will wall placement and overtoe change the frequency response large enough to compensate the SPL response mismatch?
(I don't have proper measurement microphone to test the SPL response, so...anyone have some experience of it?)

One easy and fast way to have some idea,is to try Zobel between the speaker leads,close to the driver if possible.Only few resistors and capacitors are needed.

I do not know Fostex drivers well enough to help with the components.

p.s. yesterday I finally got my own speakers to sound good with line level BSC,after long time of trying.

If its a low Qts driver in a MLTL with no series resistance and a sand amp and your ears start to bleed........then its time to look into BSC.

In theory, if you put them back against the wall, you do not need BSC, but you need some good absorbing material on the back wall to minimize reflection in the mid and highs'
