Midrange experiments

You ever build your box Mike?

I have been experimenting with this driver again for midrange. I wanted to try some midrange enclosure ideas out and it was easiest to build a tiny enclosure for this speaker than to build full size ones
:)

The plan is open back with diffusion treatment on the walls to try and minimise standing waves/resonances. Test enclosure built very simply. I haven't used it long but I observe some points.

The open back sounds somehow clearer than with it sealed (no reflected wave coming back through the cone), but a large amount of stuffing must be used or you get a "playing into a tunnel" sound. I suspect the ideal is to have the main resonance of said tunnel outside the bandwidth of the midrange; will need to be below 400hz for my mids (any idea how to calculate that, something to do with wavelengths?). Studio foam should be better than stuffing. The cabinet walls seem sturdy but still seem to resonate, I see a solution might be to build a box inside a box and fill with sand between them.

Anyhow, with the large amount of stuffing this sounds good as a midrange and this enclosure style when refined should be quite successful. A picture of the internal diffusion patterns \/

Hey V-bro

Its amazing to come across this thread. I've only just started looking around on this forum and it's funny to see someone finding the same drivers and making the same small speakers as me.

Here is my small speaker based upon that monacor driver:

I've had my eye on that drver for a while and got hold of one. They're a little bit expensive but very impressive i agree. It rolls off around 150hz

My favourite small driver is the 4" Wharfedale 3038LB. It has the amazing ability to not only give great balanced full-range sound, but also produce great bass form tiny enclosures.

I have some plots i measured using TrueRTA, i'l try and remember to upload and post them.

The amplifier is the best bit. I've tried tripath amps and i don't like them because the Iq is too high. I've built my own class-d amp using the TPA3001. Iq i've measured with a load conected is just 13mA at 12v. I have a load of new PTH PCBs comming in the next couple of days if anyone is interested. Sound wise i can't fault it, and its soo small! no output filter needed either.

I'l be back with more....

Hey,

great work man!

I can't really see much of the Wharfedale driver, can you make a more clear pic? I really wanted the Monacor driver in 4", but they don't make 'em... I love them for many reasons:

1: waterproof materials
2: light weight
3: mechanically very strong
4: very usable frequency range.

Did you see the filter I designed for it? With that circuit it produces very decent bass. Of course slightly at the cost of the max. output.... But in a small closed enclosure you can still push them very far...

Did you see I found them much cheaper from another brand? Only 15 eur. from PA-audio (the PA-K20/4 or /8) that's almost half of what the Monacor driver costs over here. It's the same freaking driver!!?

Yea they are great drivers and i'm tempted to get some of those PA ones. However, there's a minimum 20 euro delivery charge and 19% tax to add on!

Those wharfedale drivers work out less than £4 each and give a nicer bassier sound - bout twice the weight though. I got my 8 from generalosity on ebay.

mind you, my monacor is in a little 0.8L box tuned to 90hz, the whafedale is in a 1.15L box tuned slightly lower. I haven't tried any complex input filters, i just have a highpass set to 70hz. My input impedance is 104kohm so i would have to adapt your circuit. I may give it a try.

My new circuit board has an auto signal detection on/off and a battery level indicator in the form of an rgb led. :) I'm planning to make a load to sell to me mates etc. Battery life is unbeliveable. Something like 10 hours at full power, 150 hours at low power.

they're great for the park!

Hi,

maybe we can make a group buy out of the PA drivers. I can order them through my company and save you a little on the tax...and the delivery charge....

There are a lot of interesting drivers that are either very linear or have good bass or both, but all are heavy or not waterproof...

The filter circuit is certainly worthwhile to adapt, I've done quite a lot of tweaking and measuring/listening to get such a result. I'm more than happy with it myself...I created the highpass at ~70hz by decreasing the input capacitor value to 470nF....it makes sure the little drivers can handle a lot more abuse...

I'm very interested in your amp can I buy a kit from you?

are those kevlar drivers really waterproof?

Yea, the pcbs should be in on monday. How are your soldering skills? the tssop24 packages are a bit tricky. The rest is all 0805, sot-23 and soic.

Maybe some sort of trade - amps for drivers!?

Buying in bulk is a good idea. Have you thought about contacting P-audio? They may sell you them directly.

TangBand do some great small drivers. They have a new 3" sub and 2x3" full-range abs driver. all neo. I want to try out the 3" in a small BP6 enclosure with the 2x3 doing the highs.

Trouble is i can't find a supplier of them yet and Tangband didn't reply when i e-mailed them.

take a look...

Well, they're not designed as waterproof speakers, but if you do not subject the basket to water they can handle it quite well. I have given them quite some abuse... You should just mount them on the back of the baffle so the rubber surround acts as a seal.

My soldering skills are certified and I have excellent equipment (reflow oven, Mantis super magnifier and all sorts of solder holding pastes and super thin solderwire... I have soldered stuff since I was a kid.

Good idea to contact P-audio myself, I will do.

Trading a few drivers for amp(s) seems like a good idea! Let's arrange this through email contact.

I have looked into TB pallette before and found nothing that matched my demands back than, but as soon as there's more time I'll have another good look. Thanks for the hint!

wow, sounds like your probably better equipped at soldering than me!

Glad you guys like the site - PLEASE PLEASE register, add to it and spread the word! The idea is to have somewhere to upload and share your speaker pics where you can search, comment and rate them. You can then link to the pics from forums instead of using imageshack or similar.

Send me a pm or email about the amps..

Hey guys,

I have been changing bits and pieces on the design I posted about most recently... (Link to more:http://41hz.com/Forums/topic.asp?whichpage=-1&TOPIC_ID=1917&REPLY_ID=12822)

And I am planning a bedroom soundsystem with addition of a subwoofer.

Still in for a trade Davey T? If you like I can also trade a complete filter circuit, I'm sure it'll make you like the SPH-30X much better!

Latest looks:
