As some of you know, I have a pair of the Veravox 7x drivers. I really enjoy them and think they are fantastic drivers. Due to a recent move, I am in a bit of a quandry as to what to do with them. I had planned an OB for the 7xs with the Fostex 12” bass driver below in a bass reflex, ala Illusus or the Basszilla. I have them mostly built, but had to put the project on hold due to life. And now, due to the move.
The problem is the boxes are pretty wide, (well, not really) but wider than I think our new room will permit. Many windows, doorways, stairs, fireplace, etc. I think the speakers will have to flank the TV armoir. So, I’m looking for ideas. I’ve considered a possible BIB or the Supravox TQWT solution. The 7xs excel on OB, so I’m afraid to box them, but willing if that makes the most sense. One additional idea would be something similar to the Linkwitz Orion. 7x on top, a couple smaller, (8 or 10”) drivers on the bottom? Thing is, I think they’d have to be pretty quick to keep up with the 7x. Baffle needs to be fairly narrow, so the cross couldn’t be as low as optimal, but this could possibly work. If I were to try this, any thoughts on drivers? I appreciate any ideas you’d care to share. Boxed or not. Here are the specs, though have to admit I don’t think that the 93db is quite right, as they seem more sensitive. Anyway, from Solen: size: 18cm db 2.8v: 93 Z: 8 Re: 5.9 Le mH: .03 Ce F: .82 Fs: 56 Vas: 33 Qms: 3.6 Qes: .58 Qts: .50 Xmax: ±1 |

I don't see why you couldn't just make a more narrow baffle and use the fostex woofer up to a higher freq.. (..say 13 inches wide overall, and 30 inches deep for the midbass-bin ..or something like that.)
..play with the edge for basic size and open baffle spl-reduction vs. crossover freq. for the fostex. http://www.tolvan.com/edge/ Alternativly consider this horn/transmission line: http://www.yildiz.edu.tr/~ilkorur/sp...tex_fe206e.htm ..it isn't expressly made for the Veravox but it should give you the lower midrange "lift" you'll need to compensate for baffle loss. ..if you feel the need for greater construction details for a back-horn design and are willing to spend some cash to do it then consider the "Vadim" from E-Speakers. (..the design is based on a Hemp fullrange driver that has VERY similar TS param's to your driver.): http://www.e-speakers.com/ http://www.e-speakers.com/pdf/vadim-infopack.pdf You could then use the fostex drivers as sub drivers with a couple of plate amps. http://www.mcminone.com/product.asp?...5Fid=50%2D6272 (..its about the least expensive plate-amp with the much needed fully adjustable phase feature.)

Wow, thanks for all the thoughts! I'll take some time to review your links, etc. I had thought about a narrower version as well. May have to do some sketching on that. More to come. Layne |

I would give the BIB a try, in my simu I get true 30 Hz in a 2 meter BIB with 1m offset and 30*60cm mouth.

Veravox 7x BIB
Line length 140in Zdriver 29in Sl=150in^2 It's got to be pretty big compared to, say, a cabinet for a similar sized Fostex unit because Q / Vas ratio is high. Still, looks a pretty good response to me! Scott |
