Fostex 103e is a full range, about 4 inch diameter thingie.
YES IT SOUNDS FUNNY.
frequency goes haywire and all over the place from
about 1 k to about 10k and perhaps more...
this is tested AFTER BURN IN of about 100 hours,
in diff ways as follows...
a. no baffle or any thing...as is.. on string, and on desk..
b. with open baffle, plywood, 15mm thick,
with and without some wooly behind on the magnet..
c. as per fostex instruction, 190mm x 300mm box.
d. and various other boxes.
IT SOUNDS FUNNY in the higher frequencies..
like it is shouting, peaking, or wailing.
it does REDUCE it a LOT after the 100 or more hours of
burn in. THAT First hour is pure hell.
i wonder if ALL fostex full range and generally,
ALL good full range have this similar sickness ?
note that the banana skin is stretched thin like a condom.
you gotta work it for many hours and even after that,
after EACH session ...
only after 30 mins or more, does the sound settle down.
i hv used various transistor amps, some diff types of
Tube amps, and even the T amp.
BUT, the 103e,
it has possibilities.
it might be one of the lightest paper mass drivers...
so transient speed is good, dynamics are good.
IF ONE makes a simple plywood OPEN baffle and
notes that it then becomes a Brutally honest
spkr. good to test cds, and your system mabye too.
BAD RECORDINGS are shown as REALLY BAD.
GOOD ones come out listenable or good.
lots of middle ground.
almost electrostatic at times.
suddenly you are now aware the world is not
just two levels of cds, good and bad,
but at least 6 or more listenable/non listenable levels...
at times, people sit quite AWAY from its direct path,
letting the sound reflect off walls, ceilings, etc...
this indirect path might be quite pleasurable for many.
in fact, you can walk around the room, and its not bad
at all... sound is everywhere with Open baffle, more than
other cabs. with good jazz recordings,
you might feel you are IN THE CLUB.
dont worry too much about bass, basss , bass.
bass screws up anything above bass frequencies..
you want sound FIRST , so WORRY about 500 hz and UP.
the world has gone bass crazy in past decade it seems.
first get it to SOUND REALISTIC and RIGHT
then worry about bass, later please.
how to TAME this constant shriek of high frequencies ?
i dunno yet.
pls note that if you found that 80 percen t of your
cd s were playable on your boxed 3 way spkrs,
now only 30 percent might be enjoyable, bec
this little thing can be Brutally Honest in open baffle.
if this is your SECOND system, then good.
you can enjoy beyond lifelike sounds with a good setup.
play the mediocre CDS on your other systems.

the FE103E is one of my favourite drivers of all time.
mainly, I really love the tone and presentation style concerning music playback.
you have to think about it in terms of what it is good at. throw it into a back loaded horn or good TL. it really is stricktly a horn driver in my opinion. it will make good bass in the right cabinet. balances out the sound to make the rest of those cds listenable
it is very much so a luxury to be able to listen to.
yes, it can sound funny. in the upper frequencies. maybe you do not have an amp that deals with that.
it is not flat. so what.
I find that it makes all of my cds listenable, regardless of recording quality. I like honesty.
the driver has a particularly nice "oh my god" range, being in the upper range. so while it is not flat, the speed cures many of those flaws.
in general, i find that speed cures many many flaws in frequency response in general regarding drivers. perhaps this is the discrepancy that you are noticing.
shorten your question, I and others more experienced will answer it, if it can be.

there are a few different ways of tuning the enclosure with that same box geometry. the box was found in the 5 book nagaoka set.
and folks are right about the vinyl. the fostex stuff in general sounds alot better when playing vinyl. brightness and detial don;t hurt then.

I'm new about this DIY stuff but I've been reading and listening for about three months now. I finally took the plunge and bought a pair of FE103s for some horns I will build when I have the time and materials.
For right now though I cobbled together a pair of bookshelf bass reflex speakers from some plywood I had lying around. Packed in some fiber, popped in the FE103s and fired them up. That first hour or so is pretty rugged and had me wondering if I'd bought the right drivers or if my enclosures really blew that much.
Well a few hours later and I gotta say, I'm amazed at the sounds these things can recreate. Been listening to a lot of acoustic guitar and cello concertos. It's the most realistic music I've ever heard coming from my system. Then I put in a 20+ year old tape of Ella and Louis. Just stunning. I can hear so much more and the voices sound like beautiful like the finest whiskey you've ever sipped. And yes, the FE103s like vinyl.
If you're new and wondering if all the hype is worth the effort of buying drivers and building enclosures, I'd say come on in, the water is fine and the listening is even better! Particularly for the price and the fact that YOU can keep tweaking them.

I have too much wood left over from one BIB built and another in the works (this one is for upstairs).
I would like to try FE107E (?shielded version of FE103?).
1. Is the FE107E gonna work with bs-10 design?
2. Looking at the design it is not clear the thickness of the plywood, (I assume measurements are in millimeters. Can I use 3/4" plywood?
