Nice measurement! The wall placement had eliminated the need for BSC. The 40Hz is probably room gain as these typically go to 55Hz on their own. A great result nonetheless. This does of course, work in foam core, just make sure you brace the walls along the length. I like folded construction as it doesn't top over and becomes a bookshelf or standpoint.

Yes, but the original long design can be mounted on a wall, cleaning desktop space and they would make really nice monitors as well.

I may build a folded version, for fun! :) I have a lot of spare 3" drivers sitting in a box... from a previous project involving arrays!

I placed the speakers on small dressers because the 3" TABAQ is too low when placed on the floor. Although, I am very pleased that moving around the room, there is not much drop in the higher frequencies, and with a room gain around 40Hz, and don't think I am missing much bass!

Bjørn, that plot is from the pair I built (in post #980) and this driver (from post #945 which X approved for the TABAQ design!) :)

Which driver is used for the nice plot #981

Bjørn

I don't know. That is Perceval's data. I think it's same as one he uses for his line array - a no name brand unit. Not too shabby though.

Edit - Perceval just posted model above. I forgot about post 945 - I did suspect that they would work well based on Qts and fs. :)

Have had some time today to sit down and have a better listen to my TABAQ.

I have them set up on the small dressers, on the back wall. They are 180cm apart

At first, I was listening to them farther away in the room, at about 350cm. The sound was ok, but the imaging was not. It was rather dull on that front. Initially, I was concentrating on how much clean bass was coming out of them! Now, I was listening for more.

I then moved my listening position around, and found that they are really good as near fields. No toe in, completely straight, they were clean and imaging very well from 100 to 160cm away from the back wall. Really well. Past 180cm, I started to become aware of the speakers and could tell that the music was coming out from a pair of stereo speakers.

But, between 100 and 160cm, the speakers disappeared and the balance between treble and bass was near perfect.

So, I'll reiterate my comment. These would be really nice hung on the wall as monitors or just for plain listening in your computer room. They pack some punch!

So, I'm already planning the next step!

1) How about doubling the 3" drivers? One on top of the other. Would I have to expand the TABAQ in that case?

2) Also looking at alternative drivers, I found this new driver available locally. Looks like another good candidate, I presume.

Doubling drivers and run in parallel gets you a nice +6dB gain for same drive voltage. However, you will get vertical comb interference (lobing vertically) so if you move your head up or down the amplitude will fluctuate. It is worse in near field than far. You can also run it as a 1.5 way with a simple cap across the bottom driver to low pass it at the comb filter freq which is circa 1/3 the wavelength corresponding to the distance between the driver separation. Typically about 700 Hz or so. Just double the TL CSA and double the vent CSA for two drivers (mounted with the median at position of single driver). Alternatively, if not wall mounted and floor standers away from walls, make drivers bipole and you will get rid of any baffle step effect even away from walls. They will image real nicely with a wide spatial ambiance - not everyone likes but easy to try. If you think there is to much rear radiated HF, put a big cap across the back driver to low pass it below 700Hz or so.

Hi guys- I need some choosing a 3W for a folded TABAQ. Looking on Solen's web site there are 8 W3 drivers between $20-30. How does one make a choice?
They are 1053SC, 319SF, 532SQF, 593SF, 881SJ, 881SJF, 926SD, 926SDF.
What should I be looking for? Can can anyone recommend one?

Not an expert by any means, but I use the 881's, and they sound pretty darn good in the TABAQ.
