I'm in the process of pasting together a pair of Fonkens (first speaker project) and have a few questions while I’m waiting for the glue to dry. And if you don’t have a lot of clamps, there is a lot of waiting.
First, the plans on Planet-10’s website call for all the panels to be lined with ½” felt. So far McMaster-Carr is the only place I can find ½” felt and it is very $$$. I actually think that the Sonic Barrier material from Parts Express will end up being cheaper. So, am I better off sticking with felt, poly-fluff or fiberglass as recommended on the plans, or can I use ½” Sonic Barrier? Second, I’ve been reading the BSC discussion in the Full Range Reference Project thread and intend to follow up on the links provided there, but wanted to know if people are finding the need for BSC with the Fonkens. Also MJK’s paper references voice coil inductance for the speaker but the Fostex datasheet doesn’t list this info, what number do I use ? Finally, with the MJK Excel worksheet, do I use 5-3/8, 6-7/8 or 8-5/8 for the baffle dimension? I realize I'll need to listen to the speakers in the room, but I'm just looking for a good starting point with regards to BSC. thanks, Pete |
