CSS FR125 open baffle test
I was pretty amazed at how much bass this little driver produces in an open baffle (and so was my son as you can hear early on in the film )

2mb file.
And no..there was no subwoofer somewhere in the room
Source..computer soundcard playing an mp3.
Amplifier Ladyday 8 Watt SE amp..

Whoa, having never heard
a) Decent full range drivers (I've only played with cheapy ones)
b) SET amps
I have mental "images" of full range drivers in open baffles producing no bass at all, and badly rolled of treble, and I have a similar mental "image" of SE amps hardly able to go loud enough and producing no bass. That video proved everything wrong! I'm amazed!

There are many misconceptions about SET amps...some of the best bass I've ever heard came from a SET amp...just don't drive your maggies with a SET.
I was "baffled" not just by the bass from the little driver, but also the bass from an open baffle it's just insane the amount of bass from such a driver

The suspension must've been begging for mercy at the end of it though...
Nah...all in a days work...however....if I cranked up the volume..it would bottom out though...
Those silly FR125S' are tough as nails when it comes to that. I can't tell you how often I've bottomed them testing them as HT speakers
My wife literally "ducks" when it happens from the racket, expecting them to explode right outta the cabs

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
I've built these in the miniOnken box. They are very good sounding. I like them very much, but I would not use them without a subwoofer. With my Tempest they sound wonderful in my setup.
In my experience I find most speakers can do with a good subwoofer. There is bass and then there is........ bass.

80dB.that's sounds really good, what's the sensitivity of those speakers?
I'm going to try them with my Prometheus subs somewhere in January 2006.....first need to build my subsI like them very much, but I would not use them without a subwoofer. With my Tempest they sound wonderful in my setup.

Is this because it's a dipole or how does these thing work?
That is the sensitivity of the driver I think. But the implementation does change the efficiency a little...methinks.
It depends how you measure it. Hobby Hifi says 80dB, Klang und Ton says look at the frequency graphs (where you can see most of the time it is indeed close to 80dB except for between 100 and 300 Hertz where it goes to about max 85dB)

Despite this, do they still go loud with just 8W of power? I keep imagining speakers with sensitivies that low needing the volume turned all the way up!
Actually my version of the Ladyday is closer to closer to 6 watts then 8 watts.
Yes it goes that loud ..but it's a small little room. However according to Dave Dlugos it does indeed not respond well to little SE amps. On the other hand though I was suprised that a 50watt gainclone did not go all that much louder than my 4 watt SE amp.

I too am listening to the CSS FR125S in open baffles. First for a few weeks with a 20 watt/ch, then a 40 watt/ch gainclone and Channel Islands VMB-1 chip amp, then a Sonic Impact 8 watt/ch, then a Wright Sound 3.5 2a3 SET. Between the 40 watt chip amp and the 2a3 (3.5 watt/ch) SET, the potential gain was about the same (except the sonic impact was weakest). I just do not have any bigger amps around. These days I most like the Wright Sound with the FR125S open baffled.
This setup also in a small room.

Unreal isn't itBetween the 40 watt chip amp and the 2a3 (3.5 watt/ch) SET, the potential gain was about the same
