suggestions for use for speaker boxes

I have been given a pair of speakers from the late 60's. The speakers themselves don't really work so well, but the boxes they are in are beautiful. They are solid wood, about 14.5"x11"x25" exterior dimensions, and look quite nice.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get started building some reasonably high efficiency speakers into these boxes? I have 8W amps, so I could use something in the 94dB or higher range and would prefer to go full range, but I don't know how to get started. I am willing to rebuild the insides as much as I need if that will be a requirement. The only difficulty is that they are glued shut on all sides, so it looks like I am going to have to cut out the backs (in order to avoid damaging the cloth over the front) in order to get inside.

What's your budget?

If you want to do something pretty cheap you can open the back and mount these drivers from the rear so you don't ruin the fabric on front. Keep the box sealed and stuff completely with acousta stuff or wool.

Short stands or spikes to raise the cabinets off the floor would improve the sound.

If you want to spend more and your box will accomodate the larger driver on its front you can also try this:

In either case you will need a different tweeter since they have been discontinued but i would simply substitute with a simple piezo:

If they are glued shut all sides, it is probable that the existing speakers are mounted from the front, in which case cutting a hole in the back is a waste of time.

Try to check before doing anything rash.
