I've been thinking of what to pair my (as of yet) unfinished FR125S's with, and I've been considering toying with the Tripath Class D 2020 amps lately... 13W into 8Ohm, but more like 8W with any reasonable degree of THD.
Am I crazy if I want to get any reasonably loud sound out of that? |

86 dB/watt/meter. Your definitely not going to be filling any amphitheatres with the thing, but your not going to have any trouble making it out either.

They are about the efficiency of my current speakers and before I bought my own house, I couldn't run more than 500mW into them before the landlady knocked on my door

I've plugged my Hales Revelation 1 (87dB) into a Sonic Impact, and in my opinion the SI amp is not at its best when paired with a less sensitive speaker. My Pass Aleph 3 (30wpc) sounds much better juicing the Hales--more dynamism and more presence.
Of course, this is an unmodded SI. A tripath chip could work better with the right implementation, but I haven't gone down that road yet. Randy |

I have a TA-2020 which I never use above approx 8 watts for a reason you already know. I use the TA-2020 with a pair of Jordan JX92S in TL enclosures. The sensitivity of the Jordans is about 86dB. My listening room is 5.5 x 9 meters.
I usually play at a sound level which requires raising your voice just a little. This combination works excellent. If you decide to use the TA-2020, I recommend using the TA-2020 evaluation board as a starting point. |
