Full Range Speaker Photo Gallery

Alsyd,

Nice restoration project - how do the speakers sound now?

They're great! Lows are especially excellent, super smooth bass that extends fairly low. The signature, stage and imaging are similar to the FH3s I built but skewed a little down the FR range. They have slight a lack of speed and sensitivity to recording quality that is common in FR drivers which limits their utility across many different genres but overall we're really happy with the result :)

Alsyd,

Nice project! Was the original driver anything noteworthy?

Thanks!

I don't think so, they looked pretty basic. Speaker tech in the 50s was nothing like it is today!

I was looking at this thread and remembered that I posted a shot or two of a speaker project called the DNA2 by Decware Audio. This is a back loaded horn. Though they use different drivers, I felt that the Mark Audio 12P would worth a shot. As it turns out, the results are far beyond what I thought that they could do in this design. Although I use a sub with them, crossed at about 80hz, they definitely don't need one for most music. They play well with the servo sub when I do use it. I made them heavy all right, 80lbs. each.

Hello all

Here is my Fullrange version with the Alp12P -- in the Juliet cabinet. It is a real joy to listen to and gives a nice look into the essence of the music. It displays the musical room in a nearly live feeling. Listening to Richard Thompsons new EP: Streammwell/Treadwell no more -- his guitar is so physical in the room.

Best from Olav

Here it is! I really wasn't sure what to expect for the final look but I'm very satisfied - the colour scheme has a retro vibe about it. The cabinet ended up being extremely stiff with the composite wrap, 25mm overall baffle thickness and oak bracing. It's not light!

Sound is good - not incredible - but definitely good. Low end is especially punchy. Imaging is limited due to how close together the drivers are but instrument separation is respectable. I'm used to much more sophisticated 2-way speakers that I built so I'm a little spoilt :sneaky: But really, my overall goal was for this unit to sound better than the best "portable" speaker, and I think I've achieved that (just don't ask me if it was cheaper to build!)

Next I will play with stuffing to see how that effects the overall balance, then the last job is to make it battery powered! The plan is for this speaker to live in my workshop, take to parties (you know, those friends that don't have good speakers) or be used as my primary speaker(s) if I ever move to a place that is more space limited.

A while ago a packing case appeared at work, and it was ok for me to nab the lid ( 5mm ply with soft wood battens stapled around the lip ), so I made these. There is a Christmas tree diffuser in the back, an island in the middle and a MDF front baffle screwed on - originally I tried tension springs, but without a removable back, this proved to be too fiddly. The red stuff is carpet tile I found at the side of the road, the cork was of a discarded notice board at work. The drivers are wired in series with two small caps across the lower one. The finish was an experiment, the red stain worked, blending black stain from the outside in did NOT work, blending black spray paint ( rattle can ) worked, but there is some skill involved, the varnish is a bit " contoured " - I will try a clear poly coat next time. The front baffle is black rattle can with black boot polish. On initial listening they sound better than they should, quite a lively sound - they sound good on their own despite their small size, but I think they'd sound great with a sub. Overall a cheep build and interesting experiments.

Made some rear speakers for at my computer desk, using the Visaton FRS 8.
I've made them flat and white, so that they blend in.
The grill is 3D printed using white PLA, then covered in white speaker fabric.
