So, I want to build a pair of floor standers for my gf's brother. their actual size may range from a foot tall to sit on either side of his TV to something of rediculous 4 foot height, though the range of 2.5ish feet is about what im looking for, ideally.

sound quality is important, but its not really THAT important. if tonality is off, thats acceptable. what the towers cant have, is some aggrievous design fault, a peaky or harsh response, quick fatigue, those kind of problems I want to avoid.

What I would like is to build him something really impressive looking. horn would be absolutely perfect. best mix of size and looks, with enough performance to back it up.

the current candidate is the fostex 103 cab plus driver combo. this about represents my ideal budget as well. http://www.madisound.com/pdf/fostexcabs/103e_enclrev.pdf.

But I would like to find something even more impressive looking, if I can. My budget, being a gift and all, does not run to $60 drivers, but the $40 and under 4's that fostex has cabinet plans for cant really compare to the fostex cabs designed for the larger, more expensive drivers.

does anyone have a tried and true reasonable budget impressive looking horn cab plans that works well with a budget driver from madisound, partsexpress, etc that would make an ideal gift for the college bachelor?

Have a look at the Viech.

It is big, cheap and loud, quite easy to build and has a nice, dynamic sound with an impressive soundstage. It is quite popular in Germany and Austria. The only thing I don't know is where to get the Beyma 8AG/N in the USA. Th driver is about 35 Euros here in Europe.
I found following address on the net:

Beyma USA Address: PO Box 328 263 Norton Highway Mineola, NY 11501 USA Tel.: +1 (516) 746-1111

Or try to contact www.beyma.com directly to get distribution addresses in USA.

Nice greetings, Berndt

Read my last post in this thread:

http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=52919

Download the zipfile and see if you like the design.
At 42cm width and 133cm high it's impressive to say at least. :devilr:
I even have some simulations with AJhorn that someone from Austria made for me, so it is a final design and it should work as predicted, if ever built.

For the record: he managed to point me to a better driver (bassreflex!) than the visaton BG13, so now I've started my design from scratch to make a much smaller cabinet than my horn.

Feel free to contact me for further explanation, aldough I made sure the text in that thread explains almost everything.
It should also work (and very likely even better!) with other drivers, and it can be easily adapted for them by 'cutting of' the neck of the swan. Cutoff freq stays at +-50Hz dough.

Cyburgs,

Thx for the tip on the Beyma driver!
I was looking to order other drivers along with the drivers for my friends speaker, and the Beyma just cut it!

I filled it in in HornResp to see how it would behave in my 'Swan' design, and I think due to the larger moving mass and larger BL product, it goes even lower (45Hz ??? :hot: ) than I aimed for in my swan.
Take a look at the SPL curve:

Can you give some info on your expantion contour, lenght, throat and mouth area? (ok, i could try to guess it from your design, but i'd like some more info on which goals you were trying to reach. ;))

TIA

Joris
